Jul 4, 2019-
A Nepali man was among the several people killed inside a detention centre in Tajoura, near the Libyan capital of Tripoli, during an airstrike on Wednesday, according to officials at the Nepali embassy in Cairo.
Nepali diplomats said the International Organization for Migration informed the embassy about the death of Santosh Shrestha on the night attack at the Tajoura detention centre. No further details about Shrestha have been provided. The embassy said they are trying to get further information about him.
At least 40 migrants died in the attack, which the UN-backed Government of National Accord said was carried out by Libyan National Army. The group said its warplanes had hit the migrant centre by accident, BBC reported.
Most of the dead are said to be African nationals trying to reach Europe from Libya.
Officials at the Nepali embassy in Cairo said they have rescued eight other Nepali nationals from Libya and sent them to Nepal via Turkey. With this, the number of Nepalis rescued and sent back home from Libya has reached 34 in the past two months.
