Home birth-free zone campaign gains momentum in Baitadi
Jun 23, 2019-
All pregnant women of Dogadakedar Rural Municipality Ward-5 have given birth at health posts. This is the result of the campaign that was launched almost two years ago to eliminate home births in the municipality.
“We have placed the campaign in high priority,” Karki said. “We are committed to reducing home births to an absolute zero and we are working towards that goal ever since we were elected.”
Two wards in the rural municipality, wards 5 and 4, have already been declared home birth-free zones. In these wards, the municipality surveyed the number of pregnant women in two years and found that all of them gave birth in their nearest health posts. The result is an outcome of various awareness campaigns, say authorities, and they aim to eliminate the practice in the next two years.
According to in-charge of Nwali Health Post Mohan Dev Bhatta, 59 pregnant women gave birth in the health post in the last fiscal year, while this year, the count is 46 so far.
Ward-8 of the rural municipality is slated to be declared home birth-free zone next month, according to Auxiliary Health Worker of Nwali Nain Singh Goyla. Goyla said that all of the pregnant women in the ward have followed the protocol.
Other municipalities in the district are also following in the footsteps of Dogadakedar. Thirteen wards in total have already been declared home birth free zones in the district so far.
