Police units in dilapidated condition in Achham

- MENUKA DHUNGANA, ACHHAM

Apr 6, 2019-

Police officers stationed at the Dhungachalna Police Post have been working from a 60-year-old dilapidated building in the south eastern part of Achham district for a long time now.

The police post had moved to the building 18 years ago following an attack on the previous station by Maoist insurgents.

Sarpa Singh Thapa, a native of Dhungachalna, said the police officers are posted there to provide security to the people of Turmakhand Rural Municipality-4. “They have a large area to cover but they have no proper accommodation here,” said Thapa.

According to the locals, there are around six ropanies of land allocated to build a police post. “We have requested the concerned stakeholders to construct a proper building for the police personnel, but to no avail,” said Moti Singh Budha, a local man.

Dhungachalna Police Post was established 36 years ago and served as a checkpoint for three pathways that go towards the Karnali Province. Locals said the police post is necessary to ensure security along the Tatali-Gutu, Kalimara-Gutu and Dwangdwange-Bijaura

pathways.

Police personnel at the Dhakari Police Post are also operating out of a rented house in the administrative centre of the rural

municipality.

The District Police Office admitted that the police personnel have been compelled to work in dilapidated buildings. DSP Janak Shahi said, “Nineteen police units are being operated from dilapidated buildings in the district. We are facing difficulties due to a shortage of budget.”
